Dear Parents,
I commend and applaud you for reading this part of our website. It may surprise you to know that many families making the important decision about their daughter do not take the time to read every aspect of the website belonging to the school they are researching. This is specifically important to me because it illustrates one of our main principles at Greenbrier Academy: the principle of educating oneself. I truly hope that one day your daughters will obtain your ability to educate themselves as you are.
I want you to know that I am passionate about young people becoming educated. I do believe that formal education is important, however I believe that "higher education" is about learning who we are in the world. More specifically I think it is vital for people to learn who they are as a living, breathing, feeling person in relation to other living, breathing, feeling people. We all find ourselves in unique circumstances and situations. Our passion is to help people become agents within their circumstances and situations. Once people understand the nature of their present context and circumstances, we challenge them to explore how they created those circumstances and to decide if they wish to continue creating similar circumstances. It is unfortunate that so many of us believe that the past controls the future, and that we have little choice in the matter. At Greenbrier, we help our students and our families observe and explore the evolution of their present circumstances, and to have faith that the future is not controlled by the past. Greenbrier Academy for Girls holds that an important measure of success exists when we realize we have more accessible choices today than we did yesterday. And so it goes with our students; we want for them to have more choices about their relationships, identity, and beliefs when they graduate from Greenbrier Academy for Girls than when they arrived.
