Ron McAlister – Science Teacher
A long-term resident of West Virginia, Ron is a graduate of West Virginia State College, and taught Science and Social Studies at St. Anthony's School before coming to Greenbrier Academy. Ron enjoys taking advantage of Greenbrier's spacious campus during his science classes. His students use its natural resources as opportunities to get out of the classroom and do "in the field" observations and experiments. He is a master at creating experiential learning activities, and likes to see students involved in real-life problem solving situations.
One example of Ron’s diverse interests is in his leadership with Greenbrier's clubs through the theatre production for Dark of the Moon, involving students in the creation of periactoids that will serve as a backdrop for the play. These tall triangular columns are mounted on platforms with casters, and have three sides that can be turned and moved easily about the stage to show different scenes at different times throughout the production. His interest in theatre comes through involvement in historical interpretation and re-enactment. When asked why he teaches he says, "Because I enjoy sharing new information, thoughts, and ideas with others, and watching students grow."
Ron and his wife moved east and are excited to settle in the mountains they love. Ron enjoys indoor and outdoor cultural activities such as canoeing, kayaking, spelunking, finger weaving, and reading.
